or more appropriately, a Gerlach Bike toss.

Have disbanded for at least this year - they will not be on the playa.

The good news is that makes BYB the only large organized bike repair on the playa.

Oh wait...that's not the good news...THAT'S THE FUCKED NEWS!!!

ARGH.

how about we disguise the front of camp as an evangelical methodist church?

1. All the adult trikes I worked on.

2. Jen and her 70's era univega with first generation Shimano 600 and suntour superbe parts on a mixte frame. beautiful bike. She's travelling the world for a couple of years and we planned to meet up after the burn so I can take the bike off her hands but she found another more needful person. Drat!

3. The Tom Ritchey built BMX mini frame, probably built in 81 or 82. Profile cranks, Hutch pedals, torker handlebars (long before they were bought by redline and made into a lame-o cruiser line), Uni BMX seat. just amazing work.

4. Anything where I bashed the part back into working order. with a larger hammer.

The bikeshop itself

Okay, so for sure I am getting another 200 square feet of roof - the new shop will be 20X30 feet - 600 square feet.

I plan to set my stand in the back corner as always, and put the compressor at the other corner like always.

I plan to get another table, and keep it by my stand, and keep my toolbox on it (you know how nutsy I get when I can't find my tools :-) but they'll still be accessible.

We'll have the other two tables, and y'all can arrange them however seems right. Should we get a 4th table?

So far we have 5 workstands for sure - me, me, andy, tom, dusty - I bet we'll get the one loaner we get every year again, but not counting on it. It looks like Uber from JPC plans to come do some repair shifts, as does the afforementioned Dusty - this is above and beyond our cracked crew....ermmmm, crack crew...that's what I meant to say.

All in all it looks like we will have a banner year for parts, space, and labor.

Thoughts? Input? Questions?

The Rules and Laws of BYB

We need to make up a sheet, or poster, or something - like Andy has done in the past except with even more stuff - to have our "schpiel" as it were. The things we seem to tell people over and over. And they often won't believe us unless they see it in print. So this thread is the place to brainstorm it - save our ideas - and then I will edit it down to what needs to be there and make it somehow. Here we go (in no particular order):

Yes, you can ride on the playa with bare rims.

No, JB Weld/Loctite/Epoxy/Super glue will not hold parts on your bike - not the pedals, not the crank arms, no part of your bike - really really really. If you even mention the word "JB Weld" to our camp's leader, expect bad treatment.

No, a puncture ANYWHERE near the valve stem of an inner tube is not repairable...no they CAN NOT be glued on.

If you ride with a loose crank arm, it will destroy the mounting hole of the crank arm very quickly, and it can never be kept tight again. No it can't be glued - see Rule 2. If it is already loose, the only way to make it rideable is to re-tighten it all the time.

If you "taco" one of your wheels, there is a very good chance we can make it rideable again by violently slamming it on the ground - yes we have done this before - yes we know what we are doing - no you should not attempt this yourself. If your wheel is "tacoed" do not try to mess with the spoke tensions - this will make it unfixable. Proceed directly to BYB and they will deal with it.

the "living" with BYB rules and laws

This is something that has never been codified, and I wanted to make a distinction from the other rules thread which is entirely about our rules as pertains to customer's bikes.

So here's a current braindump...

Members of BYB, called Borrachos, are respectful of the camp's mission - to fix bikes - but are not required to work on bikes. There is plenty of other important stuff to do. Borrachos are expected to put more into camp than they take out - this can easily be covered by helping to set up, then sleeping in a hammock all week, and not mooching food, then helping tear down and pack up - seriously, it's a low bar :)

BYB has traditionally not been a loud camp, and traditionally has not been drug centric...both help keep the drama at a minimum.

Borrachos respect one another, and tend to not get agro about issues in camp.

BYB asks its members to participate in the preparation of one meal during the week...usually a couple/few people will arrange an evening's meal, and handle everything from preparation to cleanup. It's an easy way to have a yummy dinner every night without having to worry about cooking every night. Borrachos, like most any burner, are expected to have their own plate, cup, and utensils (although spares for guests are usually available) Speaking of guests, before inviting any guests to dinner, clear the request with the chef(s) of the evening because only they know how much food they brought..

BYB has an electric shower. It is easy to use, but there are some things you need to know. An orientation will be given to everyone on playa. Now this tho - please bring storage for grey water - a 5 gallon home depot bucket with lid works great. Our shower collects the grey water, and every user is expected to empty the catch bucket after their shower (pretty please :) If for any reason you can't do it immediately just let one of us know so that we know why it isn't empty when we go for our shower. We will have a grey water evaporator running like last year - everyone should be able to put some or all of their grey water thru it. It doesn't completely eliminate it, but it does reduce the total volume.

Like most burners, Borrachos are expected to bring their own water and food, unless other arrangements have been made with someone else.

BYB has 2 communal ice water buckets - 5 Gallons each. At the start of the week we fill them to the top with ice and then with water. Please check the water level occasionally. The ice water has been an interesting study in sharing dynamics over the years. Generally if we all take turns filling them up we do fine. If you have already put in some water, find out who hasn't...yes, it's one of our few little communistic items, but really, it's easy to deal with :)

We always have plenty of space, so we've never dicated where people set up stuff, apart from the layout of the core of camp - the bike shop, the living room, the shower, etc. Once we are placed, and you are there to set your tent up, we can walk around and help you pick a good spot.

Hopefully Andy and Holly (and any other Borrachos) will chime in and add all the stuff I have forgotten to list.

Oh, and welcome everyone to BYB's 7th Anniversary. :)

shade structures and condiments

>I have a tent but no shade structure

Andy is the tent shade man...how many did you get under that thing last year? Not including Bob's

> Is there a group kitchen?

yes

>Should I pack a stove, utensils, everytrhing includingthe kitchen sink,
>etc? how self reliant do I need to be on this dept?

No, and not very. Ingredients/foodstuffs are most important. We have a double burner stove - a second could be handy. I bring practically all the cooking implements needed - you need to have your own cup-plate-and utensils but that's about it.

>I gather I need to pack all my food and water and snacks and beer and
>gin and tonic. Or am I able to leave some stuff home, like ketchup and
>pancake mix?
>how does this work?

I'd say we should plan out our condiments as a group - no need to bring 10 bottles of ketchup...but other stuff we should each bring. We can start a discussion thread, or just handle it on tribe too in the BYB tribe...might be easier that way.

>
>Is there a shower?

yep - electric pump, and usually warm too :)
Do you have the crafting skills and materials to share to help others in their transformation? Come on over- we will need you.

Starting times are 11am. Feel free to drop in anytime after that until 3ishly.
August 20th at 109 buchanan street, # 1, SF CA

Ideally this is how the craft clinics will be handled:
- The first one to assess your bike and make sure it's mechanically functional enough to get by on the playa for a week.
- The second one to start your playa fabulous conveyance.
- The third to finish said conveyance. Or just to drink some beer and tinker with bikes.

I have plenty of tools, lube, a repair stand and *limited* spare parts (seats, pedals, brake cables, grips, etc) to rummage through. Additionally I'll have a few things for sale as a benefit for the Bicycletas y Borrachos camp such as:

- 26x1.5-1.9" Summit Playa Tube $3.00 (26x1.5" only!)
- Kenda comfort bike tires with reflective stripes $5.00
- Random Head and Taillights $5.00
- GlowSpek 9/16" LED pedals $20.00
- Active Tunes MP3 speaker kit- mounts on your bike! $35.00
( www.activetunes.com/ )

Bring your own potluck food and beverages. BBQ and coolers will be ready to use.

You should come. Really. You'll have a blast!

Hi there, I've just signed up to camp with BYB for BM this year after talking to his greatness Mr CTP. This will be my 5th year on the playa.

I just moved to Pittsburgh from SF so I'm a little limited on what help and support I can offer pre-burn...but I'll do whatever I can once I get there to help out.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

While at trader joes I thought gee- I should start stocking up beer for BM.
the question was what kind?? bottles or cans?
I remember bottles were a pain in the ass to ditch, even with the recycle camps.
If it's cans, the quality of beers are limited to rather bland pilsners and lagers.
anyone have any suggestions for the better beers in cans, aside from Guiness? do any domestic micros make a good canned beer?
anyone want to share their taste tests?

JRS Bikes issue

posted on last weeks JRS:

TWO JRS ISSUE DEADLINES - RESOURCES AND BIKES ISSUE

It's that time - two special edition JRS's are headed your way in the coming weeks...we would like to do a BIKES section or even a whole BIKES issue, with any time-sensitive or new information related to bicycles on the playa. Got a bike-themed camp, a charity bike sale, a suggestion for prepping your steed for the playa, or a workshop, thrift suggestion, or other tip for the playa's #1 conveyance? Send it in BY SUNDAY, JUNE 25th at midnight (or, to simplify that, 11:59 PM).

AND...if you're a vendor who wants to offer a special deal to Burners on playa-related goods, NOW is the time to send your announcement to jackrabbitspeaks@burningman.com. We've heard from a few of the usual burners who are kindly offering steals and deals to the community, but if you're planning to list an available shopping resource this year, you have only until SUNDAY, JUNE 25th at 11:59 PM! (Note: we compile all these resource links into one JRS so that those who don't want to read the advertisements don't have to, and for easy one-stop perusal by those who do.)

Get 'em in so we can write 'em up and send 'em out:
jackrabbitspeaks@burningman.com

Is anyone from BYB writing something up and submitting it to ol jack?
I have about 100 tires with reflective sidewalls that can be sold before BM as a BYB fundraiser.

What mechanical convenances are you all working on?

I was thinking of just using what I brought from last year but with so many neato designs on the playa I'd like to do something special. I need a trailer to hold the gin and tonics. Will dry ice last the entire week? will it damage the cooler? where do you buy dry ice?

WANTED: Art Bike Builder

Hi

I am looking to build a multi-passenger art bicycle. Mainly I am looking to contract out a frame and then decorate/modify it myself. This bike will be for use in regular city terrain, not for use at burning man. If anyone has any ideas/interest, knows any art bike builders in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, let me know. I eagerly await your response.

Thanks.

Trail a bike pieces parts

I have 5 or 6 trail a bike frames and some random parts hanging off them. I thought maybe some of the resident tinkerers would like to fool around with this. These are the 'half bikes' that you fit onto your seatpost and your kid (under 6) gets to trail behind you. Some have derailluers, some have the hitches, all are in some degree of scratchedness and not so straight. It's the scratch and dent pile.
$10 for each frame. $30 for all of them, and whatever other parts are in the boxes.

This is what they are:
Our conversation continues with Larry Harvey, Danger Ranger and Maid Marian. Here we ask: "Is Burning Man still dangerous?" Also discussed is hope and fear: the future of Burning Man. We wrap it all up with a special bonus track of Larry's explanation of why coffee is sold at Center Camp.

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:
Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

SO this may be a little odd, sine you really don't think of fit older men and women wasting their time playing golf, but I got a request from moms to 'go to taiwan and make a pedal powered golf cart.
Anyone know of a mfg that does something like this- 2 person, with room for 2 bags? Or a golf trailer that is pulled by a bike
I first thought of the sociable tandem and that could be adopted.
Then I thought - it's just a couple of crossbars so why not just make the crossbars so the retirees can use their own cruisers? The clubs can fit in the middle.

hi all,

i just joined this tribe, and we will likely be seeing a lot of each other this year! i applied for and just received a grant to create a mini rickshaw fleet this year (4-5 new ones, 1 existing one). chris has been providing advice and has also offered to let us (me so far) camp with/next to you...

he may have already given you some details about the project, i'll fill in more here or on the BYB list or at a meeting upon request. if you need a city meeting place you are welcome to use my house!

anyway, i just wanted to say i'm a conscientious campmate and am really happy to be connected to BYB! BYB saved me several times last year! now the playa is going to bring some wacky art pedicab action back to you. nice, huh?

i have a strong vision for the project but am open/will listen to all ideas in terms of technical/design issues, creative decorations and on-playa management/use. it's going to be an interesting year :)

recruiting - bring anyone you think MAY be interested in camping with us and we'll wine, er, win them over.
Expanded bike shop structure, tools, bits n bobs
New shade structure
Splitting the shower
the wedding party on Friday night :)

Please respond with a thumbs up or down for that weekend, and a preferred day (especially you CTP) and I'll count the thumbs and get back to ya'll.

pigs in space! saturday 2/5

this looks really really stoopid fun. plus spock mountain research labs is involved, which means even more stoopid fun. watch people get hit on the head with a board. weeee!!

BORG2 presents:

THE FLYING PIG SEX DISASTER FUNDRAISER

@ THE SHIPYARD in Berkeley, Saturday, February 5, 2005

Come see the pig fly! Come see the other pig do things to the first pig that are illegal in several states! Come see the pig(s) burn! The fat will drip and the pig will split and the coins that YOU put inside the pig will create a lovely musical symphony of metal and hog butter on a giant donation plate. BACON! SEX! MONEY! DON'T MISS THIS! BRING US YOUR CHANGE AND WE WILL CHANGE IT!

9 PM - 2 AM, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, @ THE SHIPYARD IN BERKELEY (directions below)

Pig Stuffing begins at 9pm sharp.

Yes, the people behind this have actually constructed a giant metal pig. It will be stuffed with money (my money, your money, the jingly kind) and lard, newspaper and sawdust; and mated with a second pig for no good reason at all. Suspended high above the majestic skyline of Berkeley, it will take a magical Peter Pan-type flight around the Shipyard, possibly to the accompaniment of jaunty marching band music, and then it will be set aflame and immolated in its own pigginess. Coins will drop magically from its belly and cascade onto a resonant metal plate. The pig dies, but offers itself up as the ultimate sacrifice to the good people at Coin Star Inc. The pig who saved art! Hooray for the pig!

BRING YOUR SPARE CHANGE AND PUT IT INSIDE THE PIG! I know I have like 50 bucks worth of pennies in a closet somewhere. What am I ever going to do with it? Hey, what if I PUT IT INSIDE A BURNING PIG? WE give the money to artists, YOU take home memories (and perhaps the odor of rendered pig fat) that will last a lifetime.

Howdy everyone, welcome to BYB's tribe.

Look around, post pix, meet people. There are other tribes that y'all might be interested in. Burning Man, Bay Area Burners, Burning Bikes being but 3 of them.

If you have pix, please post them - the more the merrier. If you have folks interested in BYB send them a tribe invite.

That's about it.
